IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF KING LUDWIG II: LINDERHOF CASTLE
The building activities of Ludwig II, who was crowned king in 1864, began in 1867/68, initially with the design of his chambers in the Munich Residenz and the laying of the foundation stone for Neuschwanstein Castle.
Ludwig II developed the first building projects for Linderhof Palace as early as 1868. However, neither the planned project of a palace in the valley modeled on Versailles nor the plans for the construction of a large, Byzantine palace came to fruition. Instead, the core of the building activities became the former forester’s cottage of his father Maximilian II, which was located on today’s palace forecourt and which the king already used as crown prince during hunting excursions with his father. Linderhof Palace, which was created from this after a long construction period, is the only major palace building that King Ludwig II lived to see completed.
The Linderhof Palace and Garden Administration is once again offering informative park tours and exciting guided tours for children in 2011.
Participation in the park tours costs 3.50 euros per person (including the castle visit 8.50 euros). For the children’s tours there is usually a charge of 2,- Euro per child (material costs). Accompanying adults pay only the entrance fee for the respective object, children and teenagers up to 18 years have free entrance.

Restoration of the Venus Grotto in the Castle Park
The Weilheim State Building Authority and the Bavarian Palace Department are currently drawing up a concept for the restoration of the Venus Grotto, which has become necessary over time. .
Unfortunately, this means that the appearance of the grotto is currently impaired by construction fences on the outside and scaffolding on the inside.|

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF KING LUDWIG II: NEUSCHWANSTEIN CASTLE
Neuschwanstein Castle is located in the immediate vicinity of Hohenschwangau and is
“built in the genuine style of the old German knight castles”.
Record attendance and conservation problems
Seven weeks after the death of King Ludwig II, Neuschwanstein was opened to the public in 1886. The reclusive king had built the castle in order to withdraw from the public eye – now his refuge became a magnet for the public.
Today, Neuschwanstein is one of the most visited castles and palaces in all of Europe. 1.3 million people visit “the castle of the fairy-tale king” every year. In summer, an average of more than 6,000 visitors a day crowd through the rooms that were intended for a single inhabitant.
The idyllic location of Neuschwanstein Castle is unique. However, movements in the foundation area must be constantly monitored and the steep rock faces must be secured again and again. Likewise, the climate severely attacks the limestone facades, which will therefore have to be renovated in sections over the next few years.
Since 1990, the Free State of Bavaria has spent about 11.2 million euros on the restoration and maintenance of the palace, as well as on improving visitor services.

IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF KING LUDWIG II: SCHACHEN HUNTING LODGE
Built from 1869 to 1872 according to plans by Georg Dollmann on the Schachenalp near Garmisch-Partenkirchen, the royal house served King Ludwig II as a refuge during his stays in the mountains.
The wooden post-and-beam building in the type of a so-called “Swiss house” has five living rooms on the first floor with pine wood paneling and historicist elements. The entire upper floor, on the other hand, is taken up by the “Turkish Hall”, which with its stained glass windows, opulently embroidered textiles, peacock feathers and candelabras reflects the enthusiasm of the king and his time for the Orient.
The hunting lodge can be reached only on foot (in about 3 hours).

MÜNTER HOUSE
The Münter House, also called the “Russian House”, is located in Murnau am Staffelsee and is known for the staircases and furniture painted by Gabriele Münter and Wassily Kandinsky. In the Münter House, as well as in the castle museum, the most important works of the two painters, as well as those of the artist group ,,Blaue Reiter” are exhibited.
After extensive renovation in 1998/99, the building has been set up as a place of remembrance for the great painter Gabriele Münter and is open to the public. It was a special wish of the artist that her house become a place of remembrance for her and Kandinsky’s art. Gabriele Münter, whose paintings occupy an outstanding position in the art of our century, has also made an invaluable contribution to art history through her unique donation of works of the art of the “Blaue Reiter” to the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus in Munich. The Münter House is a monument to her and to Kandinsky, with whom she broke new far-reaching ground in art here.

Mittenwald
Highest and very picturesque climatic health resort known for violin making, as well as for the typical Bavarian Lüftlmalereien on the houses, located below the Karwendel.
Worth seeing is the violin making museum with its extensive collection of instruments and the violin workshop.
Visit the approx. 3000m long Leutascher Geisterklamm between Mittenwald and Leutasch.
Did you know that the market Mittenwald is located on one of the oldest Roman and trade routes? The place was first mentioned in documents around 1096-1098. Until 1803 it belonged to the bishopric of Freising and the county of Werdenfels. In 1361, Mittenwald was elevated to the status of a market town by Charles IV and has had a coat of arms with a seal (Mohrenkopf and three fir trees with mountains) since 1407.
Mittenwald has preserved its historic appearance until our time. Impressive is its rustic townscape with the old, Upper Bavarian houses in the midst of a generous landscape scenery.
In recent years, many houses, churches and chapels have been masterfully decorated with frescoes by the local artist family Pfeffer. Son Stephan Pfeffer, born on 24.02.1962 Lüftlmaler, master wood sculptor and plasterer, continues this tradition skillfully. A large number of his works can also be seen in Mittenwald itself.

Michael Ende Year 2009
The highlight of the Michael Ende year was the festival premiere of “The Neverending Story” as part of the KULTurSOMMER. The premiere was on August 22, 2009 in the circus tent of the Kurpark Garmisch. At the same time, the park was ceremoniously renamed “Michael Ende Kurpark” on this day. Here he planted an imperial lime tree in 1990, around which a lawn labyrinth was created. The turtle “Kassiopeia” from “Momo” and “Fuchur” the legendary dragon from the “Neverending Story” can even be found as a flower bed.
As part of the largest permanent exhibition on the life and work of Michael Ende, fans of the writer can immerse themselves in his fantastic world. In lovingly designed rooms, visitors can learn more about Michael Ende’s childhood and youth in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, meet characters from the “Augsburger Puppenkiste” and learn about the life and work of Michael Ende in interactive listening and viewing stations.
The permanent exhibition “The Beginning of the End” is open Tuesday through Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.
Oberammergau
World famous place for the Passion Plays, which take place every 10 years, as well as for the wood carvings. Worth seeing is the local museum, as well as the many Lüftlmalereien.
The Pilatushaus in Oberammergau is the masterpiece and showpiece of this fresco painting. But the Lüftlmalerei belongs to the whole region just like the surrounding mountains! In all places you can find the artfully decorated house facades, which “pretend” structural wealth and diversity.
In the 18th century, the so-called Lüftlmalerei flourished because, according to legend, the painters always worked outdoors or in the air.
Small introduction to the world of passion plays:
The next Passion Play will take place in 2020.
The history of the Oberammergau Passion Play is inextricably linked to the time of the Thirty Years’ War. At that time, the plague was rampant. And when the plague also ravaged numerous inhabitants of Oberammergau, some citizens vowed in 1633 to perform Passion Plays every ten years, should the suffering come to a swift end. According to tradition, the plague did not claim any new victims from that time on. In 1634, the people of Oberammergau began to make good on their promise. Since then, they have performed “their plays” every ten years.
Tickets:
Advance sales should take place around April 2019.
These maps should be available to our guests who can easily reach Oberammergau in a day trip.
For your overnight stay during the Passion Play, the Parkhotel Wallgau is at your disposal.

Tyrolean capital with many sights, including the “Golden Roof”, as well as the ski jump at the Bergisel.
Goldenes Dachl – The landmark of the city of Innsbruck – the oriel covered with 2,657 fire-gilded copper shingles – was built as a commissioned work under Emperor Maximilian I by the then court architect Niclas Türing the Elder around 1500 and is unique in its kind in Europe.
The Alpine Zoo is also worth a visit.
A special attraction is the Swarovski Crystal Worlds, located about 15km from Innsbruck in Wattens.
Culture has been alive in Innsbruck – since time immemorial: Already under Emperor Maximilian I, highly talented artists were brought to Innsbruck, revered and appreciated. Other historical milestones, such as the construction of the first free-standing theater and opera house north of the Alps under Archduke Leopold V in 1629/39 and the founding of Austria’s second-oldest provincial museum (1823), testify to the fact that cultural life has always been of great importance in the city on the Inn.

MOUNTAIN WORLD KARWENDEL – ENVIRONMENTAL EXHIBITION
Enjoy an incomparable view more than 1,300m above the rooftops of Mittenwald! View the landscape from a new angle and discover an extraordinary world full of life artists at an altitude of 2,244m! The exhibition offers visitors an insight into the alpine ecosystem and the habitat “Karwendel”.
In a safe environment, it also makes less mountain-experienced visitors understand the special living conditions of plants, animals and people in the alpine region. This is conveyed via the characteristic species of rock ptarmigan and the role of humans in the Karwendel alpine ecosystem. Therefore, space is also devoted to the topics of “dangers in the mountains” and “cultural-historical developments”. The “father” of this exhibition project at this spectacular location with its avant-garde architecture is Dr. Lutz Spandau, Chairman of the Allianz Environmental Foundation.
